Ensuring strong social protection for the vulnerable and unemployed youth:  Key focus areas

The focus is on the unemployed youth (in the context of the government’s program on youth wage subsidy) and the poor without medical aid (in the context of government’s efforts to introduce universal health coverage).  The interventions include:

  • Campaigning for increase in tax for the super rich and mining tax to finance universal health coverage, while ensuring that the universal health coverage  is not VAT-driven.
  • Establishing and strengthening viable models of community based health insurance schemes.
  • Strengthening accountability system and reducing the problem of resource shortages in rural hospitals by establishing in each province an alert system on resource shortages that is driven by input from community activists and health workers.
  • Establishing a platform for policy discussion on how to deal with high levels of youth unemployment.
